FAIRMONT — Astronomers predict that a rare super blue moon will be visible by Wednesday.
New Ulm senior striker Dominick Kamrath produced a prep soccer rarity under a nearly full moon at Kot Soccer Complex in Fairmont on Monday night.
Kamrath erupted for a career-best seven points on the strength of five goals and two assists to power the visiting Eagles to a 9-1 Big South Conference runaway victory over the Fairmont Area Cardinals.
“Dom has a number of colleges scouting him for soccer,” New Ulm head coach Dave Dake said in reference to Kamrath. “He’s quick, aggressive and has a nose for the net.”
Kamrath delivered two goals and one helper to stake the Eagles to a 5-0 halftime advantage before generating three more twine-finding kicks and one assist during the final 40 minutes of running time.
“Five goals is the most I’ve ever scored in a game … I think,” said Kamrath, who collected a hat trick — three goals — during New Ulm’s 6-1 victory over St. Peter on Saturday.
New Ulm proved highly efficient with its shots on net, converting 5 of 9 during the first half. In fact, Brennan Shaver needed only 28 seconds to produce the Eagles’ initial goal off Daniel Brownfield’s lead pass via the opening kickoff.
Kamrath then nailed the perfect free kick from 30 yards out along the left wing. The New Ulm forward hit a rising liner that hugged the crossbar, hit the right post and spun into the webbing for a 2-0 lead at the 33:04 juncture.
Kamrath then skidded a low shot that Fairmont Area keeper Thomas Hamlet knocked away only to have Aaron Black tap home the rebound at the 12:05 mark.
Kamrath and Shaver capped the opening half by knocking home back-to-back unassisted goals on breakaway rushes at the 6:57 and 32-second junctures for a 5-0 lead by intermission.
New Ulm starting goalie Ethan Goff denied two hard left-wing blasts off the foot of Fairmont Area’s Jack Sadusky and one apiece from Angel Sanchez and Isaiah Lockwood during the initial 40 minutes.
Kamrath then lended a foot to all four of the Eagles’ second-half goals, setting up Jackson Ocampo’s endline net-finder before chipping home three consecutive goals to cap his seven-point outing.
Sadusky finally spoiled New Ulm’s shutout bid by Goff and second-half keeper Jens Quist by hammering home a penalty kick with 21:34 remaining in regulation. Fairmont Area was awarded the kick when Gerson Revolorio was fouled on a rush inside the box.
Goff finished with four saves, while Quist made three stops for the Eagles. Hamlet delivered four saves for the Cardinals, while Jonathan Heinze denied two second-half shots, including a penalty kick.
Fairmont Area (1-2) travels to Edgerton today for a 4:30 p.m. match against Southwest Minnesota Christian, while New Ulm (3-0) travels to Waseca on Thursday night.
